Former Real Madrid man Toni Kroos will be remembered as one of the greatest midfielders of all time. However, the retired midfielder showed a different side to himself recently when he spoke on the Lanz & Precht podcast, stating that Germany’s level of immigration has been “too uncontrolled,” leading to a “loss of control” in Germany.

As Breel Embolo became the first player in World Cup history to score against the country of their birth, when he scored in Switzerland’s 1-0 win over Cameroon, it made me think about National Identity at the World Cup, and how interlinked immigration and football really are.
